The most popular materials used in shirts
The most popular materials used in making shirts are the denim, fleece, fur-lined, gore-tex, chiffon, coolmax, jersey, cotton blend, flannel, sateen, satin, shearling, silk, silver, fur, gabardine, jacquard, acrylic, polyester, poplin, PVC, broadcloth, canvas, cotton, knit, lace, ramie, rayon, spandex, straw, suede, taffeta, twill, velvet, viscose, wool, leather, linen, lycra, merino, microfiber, nickel, nylon, pinpoint, polyamide, cashmere, and the corduroy.
Acrylic (also known as akrylfiber in Sweden, akrylfiber in Netherlands, acrylsauer in Germany, & acrylique in France) is a synthetic fiber polymerized and crafted out from acrylonitrile; a colorless, combustible, and organic molecule. It has a boiling point of 77¡ C and a formula of CHMCHCN. Acrylic (which is very capable against bleaches, dilute acids, and alkalies) is known to be a thermoplastic element. When heated it become soft and when cooled it hardens. It has a low moisture recovery and high in dimensional stability. It is also regarded that acrylics are low in density and can easily be washed and dried. Acrylic can withstand constant weathering and microbiological attack. Among the many uses of acrylic are in the areas of clothing (textile), coatings (paints), and adhesives.
Chiffons are pure, clear, and lightweight cloth crafted from twisted yarn. Its lightweight and strong material is usually made from cotton, silk, or synthetic fiber. This type of clothing material, which is a pure textile of silk or rayon, can be designed with piece-dye or piece-print process. It can also be given a soft or rigid finishing. Evening dresses, formal blouses, and scarves are among the byproducts of chiffons. Chiffons are known as gaze (f) de seda in Portugal, chiffong in Sweden, lichte (taart) vulling in Netherlands, and mousseline in France.
Corduroy, which comes from words cord (obsolete) and duroy (woolen fabric), is a vertical-ribbed and cut file-piled cloth usually with a sideway ridges. In the beginning, corduroys are made from cotton. However, due to some technological advancement at present, rayon, polyester, and acrylic are crafted to make corduroy. Some of the byproducts of this clothing material are the trousers, coats, and slip covers.
Polyester, which is a variety of polymers, is among the most popular materials used in making shirts. It is an artificial fiber created through the process of alcohol and organic acid polymerization (a chemical effect in which small organic molecules react to form large molecules). Polyesters are known to withstand crumpling and springing when wrinkled. Just like acrylic, it is very stable and can easily be washed and dried. It also has a low maintenance feature which can be applied in wash-and-wear types of clothing. This type of clothing material can be found in nature even though much of its production is done synthetically. The first recorded use of synthetic polyester, which was then called as the glycerine phthalate, was during the World War I era. During this period, polyester was used for waterproofing. Other kinds of synthetic polyesters are polycarbonates and polyethylene terephthalates (PET). However, natural polyesters were first used in 1830.
Microfiber (a kind of polyester) was launched in 1986. This kind of material has a thin filament and can be used to produce curtains, throw rugs, and different sorts of cushioning or insulating textiles.
Aside from textiles, polyester is also applied in bottles, Mylar films, photographic films, fiberglass (also known as the glass-reinforced plastic), liquid crystal displays (LCD; usually used in calculators, laptop computers, digital monitors, flat screen TV, & cellphone display), holograms, and filters.
Among the shirt brands made out of polyester include the Armani Jeans Cotton Polyester Blend Pants, Mica black burnout print polyester blend sleeveless dress with hot pink lining, Petals Power 40" Gown, Sportif USA Evans Rayon Polyester Shirt - Long Sleeve, Puma Women's Foundation Polyester Jacket, Nike Lingerie Polyester Training Suit, and the Petals Power 40" Print Coat. Tuxedos USA, Incorporated's polyester clothing are the 3017C Men's Full Dress Tailcoat, 3033P Men's Tailored Front Adj. Tuxedo Trouser, 2025P Men's Pleated Trouser, 3002C One Button Tuxedo, 3003C Men's Peak Lapel Tuxedo, 2225P Ladies' Pleated Trouser, and the 3032P Men's Tailored Front Tuxedo Trouser. Spandex, also called as elastane, is an elastic fiber created from a polyurethane polymer. It is classified by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission as "A manufactured fiber in which the fiber-forming substance is a long chain synthetic polymer comprised of at least 85 percent of a segmented polyurethane". It was developed by the DuPont Company in 1959 as an alternative to rubber. Spandex can be expanded 500 times more than its original size without splitting it. It is also lightweight, can withstand scratch, more robust than rubber, and it has an antistatic property. When worn, spandex can defy body oils and sweat.
Among the major uses of spandex is its application in exercise wears, swimsuits, ski pants, slacks, hosiery, leggings (stockings), and belts. Hanes Nylon Spandex Panties and Jockey Spandex Shirt are two of its example products. It is also the most used superhero custom.
At present, INVISTA and Bayer Corporation are among the major spandex manufacturers.
Ramie, with the scientific name of Boehmeria nivea, is also known as the Chinese silk plant and the China grass. It is a kind of herb plant indigenous to Asia. Its primary application is for textile production. It is usually mixed with cotton or wool to produce a quality shirt. Its top producers are the Philippines, Brazil, and South Korea. In the world of botany, ramie belongs to the Plantae Kingdom - Magnoliophyta Division - Magnoliopsida Class - Urticales Order - Urticaceae Family and Boehmeria Genus.
